What is Transpersonal Leadership Coaching?

Transpersonal = beyond and through the personal

The Spirit at Work programme is based on Psychosynthesis, developed by Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli during the 20th Century. He wanted to go beyond psycho-analysis and create a psycho-synthesis, bringing together the psychological insights of analysis with the wisdom and beauty of wisdom traditions from East and West. His aim was two-fold:

    • to go beyond the inward focus of psychoanalysis to emphasise that the individual is “a cell of the whole” – therefore who we are and what we do in the world matters. Through our being and doing we make a difference.

    • to re-introduce ‘secular spirituality’ into the everyday – because humans have always yearned to go beyond simply satisfying our material needs. And through the spirit at work we can be our better selves more often.

Assagioli created a practical psychology, aimed at equipping ordinary people “who refuse to submit passively to the play of psychological forces which are going on within them.”

A powerful waterfall cascades down a moss-covered cliff into a clear blue river, surrounded by lush green hills under a dramatic sky.

Over almost a century he created a raft of effective and engaging working tools to enable people to live fuller, better, more contributive lives. But more than this he developed a way of seeing and being in the world, synthesised in his famous ‘egg’ diagram of the psyche, which brings together past, present and future and mind, body, emotions and spirit in a way that makes sense and inspires.

"Vibrant discussions and a generosity in sharing of experience"

“This is an impressive transpersonal coaching programme, incorporating psychological research, coaching expertise and practical relevance. It is designed for coaches working at depth with clients who are navigating much uncertainty and complexity in these anxious times. The pace, rhythm, flow and overall design of the program was well crafted and hugely effective...The participants were all highly experienced which allowed for vibrant discussions and a generosity in sharing of experience.”

    Mind, Body, Emotions... and Spirit

We know how uplifted we feel when walking in a beautiful landscape or looking at an awesome painting, when we listen to great music or watch inspiring dance, or when we have an enriching conversation. This is the human spirit at work!

Humans are not just goal-seeking consumers! The spirit is an essential part of being fully human. Our birthright is to love and be loved, yes. And also to contribute our best: the urge to fulfil our potential, to be and do the best we can, is innate. When this is frustrated we suffer.

Spiritual Intelligence = that which ignites and sustains our spirit

A vast star-filled night sky stretches over a quiet, illuminated town nestled at the base of dark, snow-dusted mountains.

The enemies of success are feelings of meaninglessness and cynicism. Spiritual Intelligence is about bringing meaning, purpose and our dreams into the picture. This brings richness to our work. Spirit at Work develops our capacity to cultivate joy, courage and compassion - as well as addressing our inner blocks – so we can live fulfilling and contributive lives.

The transpersonal emphasises our interdependence. We cannot live for ourselves alone, just as success is always a team effort. Our individual identity is connected to the collective and the universal, just as our psyche is nourished by our spirit. The will – our drive to action – plays a part too. But being our best is less about muscling up or pushing through and more about refining our will and working intelligently with our inner and outer resources.

Spirit at Work reconnects us to the sense of being part of humanity and the wider world. This cultivates an ecosystems mindset, to go beyond habitual ego-centeredness and think and work in ways better suited to our global, interconnected world.

Transpersonal methods restore wider frames of meaning using practical tools and models that have been developed and endured for over a century – sustaining leaders and coaches in their work, and helping their clients re-engage at a different level.

    From Hierarchies to Ecosystems

    Archipelagos of Sanity

Building on Margaret Wheatley’s concept of Islands of Sanity – places of “possibility and refuge” – Spirit at Work aims to create Archipelagos of Sanity: communities linked by the red thread of meaning, the Ethics of Care and the determination to nurture and contribute regenerative thoughts, conversations, ideas and actions.

Spirit at Work actively promotes values such as courage, compassion, ethics, beauty, collaboration and contribution expressed through our work, in service to a better world for all.

We do this within the taught modules, through the programme study groups, and by supporting our alumni network with CPD offerings; and beyond the programme through alliances and partnerships with like-minded organisations.
